The Following Is a Summary of an Article That Appeared in the 7 DEC 2011 Issue of the Rochester D&C

“For Legion Post Long History Nears End”

By Staff Writer – David Andreatta

It took nearly 65 years, but time has finally caught up with the Stevens-Connor American Legion Post in Rush.  (Note:  The post will remain active and will continue to meet in the building on Pinnacle Road.  PH)

The men who are Post members and who maintained the building have agreed to transfer the building, a converted one-room schoolhouse dating back to 1881, to the County of Monroe, Department of Parks for a fee of approximately $116,000.  The County will convert the building into a “five-star lodge” that can be rented for $350 per day.  The building will become the only county lodge in the trail park and the first in the Town of Rush.  The American Legion Post and the Boy Scout Troup will maintain control of storage/office space within the building.  The County has also agreed to provide meeting space in the building for both the American Legion Post and the Boy Scout Troop at no cost for a lengthy period of time.

COMBINED LUNCH MEET WITH AMERICAN LEGION POST #664, HONEOYE FALLS

THE NEW MONROE COUNTY VETERAN'S ID CARD IS AVAILABLE

Please note:  If you already have a Department of Veterans Affairs photo ID card, you do not need to apply for the Monroe County Veteran's ID Card.

Thomas P Flanigan, Vice Commander Legion Post # 100, has sent the following out relative to obtaining the new Monroe County Vet ID card that may be used to obtain discounts at many establishments.

"To Monroe County Vets: by some fluke I am the first Vet to recieve the new Monroe County Vet ID card. The side shown is the reverse side. The front side has my name, photo and Service Branch. That is all that is required. I got this at the Monroe County Clerk's Office @ 39 West Main St. Rochester. Phone (585) 753 1600. You will be able to get your card at the Clerk's Office or the Veteran's Service Agency @ 125 Westfall Rd. Rochester. Phone (585) 753 6040, ask for Fawn. DD-214 is required if they do not have you already on file. This will get you on file at either place. Fawn tells me that right now she does not have the equipment to process you, so for the first few days maybe going downtown will be your best bet. At the County you will have your card with you when you walk out. Hope this will be of help to my Comrades. Tom Flanigan ."

(I did not include the photograph of Tom's card.  PH)

LOCAL DISCOUNTS FOR VETERANS

I understand that the following local businesses will offer discounts to veterans and military personnel:  Lowes, Home Depot (I have been told that Home Depot and Lowes require the presentation of a VA picture card labeled "Service Connected" meaning the bearer has a VA recognized service connected disability to get a 10% discount on purchases.  I have been further advised that Lowes checks this requirement closely but Home Depot is not consistent.) and Verizon Telephone.  In order to receive a discount you may have to show proof of military service such as your American Legion membership card or a VA picture identification.  It doesn't cost anything to always ask if a business offers a discount to veterans and military personnel.  If you identify a business that offers a discount or discover an error, please send an e-mail notice to the web master to have this list updated.

2011 ANNUAL RUSH FIRE DEPARTMENT PARADE

On July 8th, 2011, the Rush Fire Department opened their carnival with a parade through the village.  One outstanding vehicle on display was the NEW RUSH EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLE.  Click on the following link to view pictures of the parade.

2011 ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY PARADE IN RUSH

The 65th annual Rush Memorial Day Parade was held on Monday, May 30, 2011.  This parade was sponsored and conducted by the Stevens Connor American Legion Post #1330 of Rush, NY in conjunction with the Rush Fire Department.  The success of the event was highly dependent upon the support of the Rush American Legion Post, Rush Fire Department and the Rush Fire Department Band, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Rush Lions Club and ESPECIALLY the many spectators who braved the threatening early morning weather to honor our military heroes.

The parade route was from the Catholic Church at Route 15A north to Route 251 and west to Pine Hill Cemetery where a brief presentation and memorial service was held.  The parade then returned to the Rush Fire Hall for a presentation honoring Stevens-Connor American Legion Post member William Gaffney for his dedication to The Legion for over 65 years. Dismissal was followed by a picnic lunch for all attendees.

A special thanks to Ron Regoord and Norm Miller who coordinated the details leading up to the parade.

NEED A COPY OF YOUR DD-214 (PROOF OF SERVICE) ? (Revised 12 DEC 2011)

Go to the U.S. Army Human Resources Command web site www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html

At the top of the web home page on the left side is a section titled “Request Military Service Records.” Click on the box.   This will launch the page "Learn About Requesting Military Records."  Click on the top bullet “Use eVetRecs.”  This will clearly explain how to use the internet to download required forms and how to submit them.

If this gets to be confusing, then you can contact them directly.  You can fax a letter of request to them or send a letter of request by mail to:  National Personnel Records Center, 1 Archives Drive, St Louis, MO 63138-1002.  Their FAX number is 314-801-9175.

Please keep in mind that the agency needs the following veteran's information:  Full Name, Service Number or Social Security Number, Branch of Service, Dates of Service, and Birth Date.  Do not forget to state that you are requesting a copy of the "DD-214" form for this veteran.  It would probably be best to state your legal relation to the veteran and sign the request.

When you submitted your request, you should be sent an acknowledgement by email or by US Postal Service.

(NEW FEATURE) -- Comments from the Post's Web Master:

The following is a column edited by Paul Heaney, Web Master, Rush American Legion Post 1330.  This column is being added to provide a forum for individuals who view this web site to comment about items and issues that are of significance to American Citizens, especially with respect to veterans.  The content is under the control of the Web Master with review by the Post's Officers.

I welcome comments relative to the content of this column, the web site in general, or other issues that readers feel should be brought to the attention of others.

Today I received a link to a UTUBE video that I believe should be of interest to all Americans.  It is strongly presented and I feel that it is slightly one sided but definitely presents an issue that is (or should be) in the minds of all American Voters.  I understand that to date it has been viewed by more than 6 million people.  Click on the link below to view this video.
